The longer I live, and the more I observe human behavior, the more convinced I become that a core part of human nature is having someone to hate. It’s just a question of who and to what extent. The why is almost incidental: any difference will do.

absolutely agree - and this is the basis of my active non-support for 'hate' crime legislation. all these laws do is tell the people who they are allowed to hate

A college professor famously got a class to draw lines over who guessed above vs below a number he was thinking of. (Not so famously that I remember who or where)

I know nothing about debate rules/protocol/standards. But:

Aren't you supposed to reply to the arguments of the opposite side? That is, what they actually argued? It seems to me she is responding to the 'meta' of the opposite side, that is, their characteristics, in this case, I guess, their "whiteness", but it could also be anything else she does or doesn't like about the opposite side. Why doesn't such a response result in immediate disqualification?

For example, what if she had responded saying "they are wearing the wrong kind of clothing for a debate, therefore their response is invalid." I'm not sure I see a difference between this and complaining about their "whiteness".

I feel I'm missing something obvious, so happy to be corrected. Thank you.

Hi. I’m a parent of an actual HS varsity policy debater who unironically dreams of going to the Tournament of Champions. (He does, to be clear.)

Some fun facts:

-Policy debate has a single topic that everyone debates on for the full year.

-The students can be assigned for or against the proposition. They have to be ready for both.

-The judges are known in advance and post their “paradigms” or basically “here’s how I judge” so debaters can tailor their arguments. You can read all the judge paradigms yourself at tabroom.com which is the platform for debate. Some of them say quite up front that they accept privilege arguments, so it’s not shocking that the students might use that.

I appreciated the explanation of that debate technique ("spreading?" good god) because I was sure I was watching someone in the throes of a manic breakdown, while onlookers tried to remain impassive. I looked for clues in the facial expression of the top middle Hollywood Square, but no luck. The guy in the lower left's eyebrows jumped once or twice, but whether it was because he found the gasper's points brilliant or daffy, I guess I'll never know.

Meghan is the charismatic cult leader but Sarah is the number 2 behind the scenes who makes all the rules and does all the enforcing while Meghan floats around ethereally in a gauzy mu'umu'u.

I’m in by the way

I see Sarah as the contemplative, quietly charismatic guru and Meghan as more the strong-arm enforcer keeping enemies lists, overseeing the beatings, and orchestrating the poisonings (she does have more corporate-political experience).

You could be right! We’ll have to wait and see ;)

"Don't be sorry they deserve it!" made me laugh out loud. Imagining Sarah's face while Meghan read that book synopsis out was priceless.

Sarah - look at the book Machiavelli for Women about the strategy of representing someone other as a venue for women expressing direct power. Also, I did go to twitter to subscribe to Megan to help out her numbers, but I was already subscribed.

While sex has no doubt been used as a recruiting tool by other cults, probably the most infamous example was the Children of God cult and its "flirty fishing" tactic. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flirty_Fishing

Sarah would make an excellent cult leader, and I would almost certainly join (even without a honey trap, though I'm open to exploring all membership perks). Might even relocate to the commune. However, if the idea is to follow the typical M.O. and have me sign over my earthly possessions to procure a fleet of luxury cars, the ladies will be sadly disappointed. (Best think less Rolls Royce and more Camry.)

I went to a boys High School and it was indeed Lord Of The Flies, I was in constant fear of my life on a daily basis and it has scarred me for life. That is all.

I attended a women's college and loved it; I'm bummed these places have turned into lunatic asylums.

Men from neighboring colleges--which were within walking distance-- could attend classes on our campus and while you could "host a guest" for a few days in your room, the men had to be accompanied by a lady at all times. Any unleashed man would be reported.

So basically there were dudes everywhere and I think that kept us sane.

All anyone cared or talked about was getting a good job after graduation and if we had done *anything* to screw up our future job prospects our parents (who were financially exhausted from writing tuition checks) would have murdered us

I’m constantly amazed by the tolerance for people doing antisemitic things and I realize it comes from the distance of not having skin in the game. The only problem is that antisemitic hatred just keeps spewing and spewing. And people ripping down the posters is just one easily documented version of it. Meghan please stop taking the words of a Jewish teenager as an excuse for these hateful high school students. This teenager has joined the haters, a common response of Jews to hatred directed at them. (Just think of the psychology of having to go to school with all these people marching against you and imagine how much easier it would be to join the mob.)

This weekend I saw my cousin in law in Florida who moved to the US from Columbia and converted to ultra Orthodox Judaism, meaning she is visibly Jewish. Earlier that day her dental hygienist asked if she believed in god bc her church told her that Jews are the worst because they don’t believe in god. In the same conversation, my cousin told me that her father told her that her three Jewish sons, his grandsons, all younger than 8 years old, smell like Jews.

Sarah's comments about the Ann Zhao's book was funny...the "they deserve it" was priceless. I am wondering though what Sarah and Meg's take on "asexual and aromantics" is. I am personally a bit skeptical about it, assuming we are talking about a fully physically mature adult. It seems that the evolutionary desire for reproduction would be very strong, and the intertwining of emotional, physical, and (to some people) spiritual pleasure of erotic sexual relationships is one of the greatest human pleasures. It seems that the "asexual aromantics" may have some type of "baggage" (for lack of a better word) such as sexual trauma, confidence issues, anxieties, depression, etc; in contemporary high culture,"identiterianism" is a fad, so it is appropriate to "identify" as asexual and aromantic. Is there a podcast or writing where either of the two explore this aspect of sexuality?

I’m getting onto this conversation late bc my subscriber link never works but I just wanted to comment on the posters being put up and ripped down from the perspective of someone who knows people putting up posters. The motivation is almost entirely the same as it has always been. Total shock and pain about what happened and now dismay that no one seems to care. Israelis have not forgotten about the hostages and can’t understand why others have forgotten. Leaving no one behind is at the core of Israeli identity and Jewish identity before that with laws, commentary, prayers, and songs devoted to Jews in captivity. This is a country that gave up 1100 terrorists to get one soldier back. Yes, they want to remind people of what happened but the pain underneath these reminders is very deep and real.
